SELFiE: RAFiA SANTANA
SELFiE is a solo public art exhibition featuring multimedia artist Rafia Santana. It pairs visual art with carefully crafted soundscapes (accessed through QR codes below each image) to create a medium-bending exploration of an artist on a journey of self-care. In the SELFiE series, Rafia creates a distinct visual aesthetic that merges photography, image manipulation, and digital painting to produce a hybrid form of representation between the ubiquitous “selfie” and the classic self-portrait. Creating colorful and sonic environments in which to immerse herself, Rafia uses an interplay of contrasting aesthetic principles to explore Black femininity andmental health. With selfies as her instrument of choice, Rafia captures the spirit of the millennial Black woman inhabiting the cyber universe, unloading racialized and gendered expectations of her— as a matter of both choice and survival— and seeing herself through a new lens, unfiltered and beautiful.
