This October will mark my 20th anniversary of living in Belgium. Over the last 2 decades, my Syrian husband and I have seen the addition of several Arabic churches in the country. We have seen one of the original churches lock its doors and sell the building after over a decade and a half of ministry. We have carried a heavy burden of the brokenness of Arab church on so many levels and longed for healing. Over the last year, we have felt the shift in the desire of a handful of people waiting and expecting more among Arabic speaking sisters and brothers. We decided to try something new. Together with our local ministry partners, a couple from Egypt, we began a discipleship school. Over the last 6 months, a little more than 20 people show up each month to learn how to serve. Many have never read the Bible, so that seemed like a wonderful place to start. Now they are spending time each day reading no less than 10 chapters of the Bible a day. They are now almost finished reading the Bible for the second time in 2 different translations. They spend time each day in private worship and prayer. And together they learn about different areas of ministry and service. -- Janee Angel, CBF Field Personnel, Antwerp, Belgium
I’ve been serving as CBF field personnel in Northern Africa since 2018. That means that I live here long-term and that I represent congregations that belong to the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship as we partner together in ministry with the local church of my country. There’s only one protestant church that’s legally recognized in this Muslim Kingdom, and we have 13 satellite campuses scattered throughout the country. I serve on the national pastoral team and work most directly with the branch of our church that does outreach ministry to refugees and migrants. Together with my colleagues, we get the distinct honor of training and equipping our lay-led teams as we bear witness to the love of God through the ways we walk alongside our neighbors in distress. – Karen, CBF Field Personnel, North Africa
"Christians are different. I don't know any Muslim who would give and do what you and others have done. You are different," shared Zuhra, a dear Afghan refugee friend. That conversation led to many opportunities to share what Christians believe. Recently, a friend who had been walking alongside Zuhra and her family called to tell me that Zuhra had been reading the Bible and said she believed what Jesus said was true. She shared she couldn't openly be a Christian but asked if my friend would teach her and husband more about Jesus. My friend wanted me to know about Zuhra decision and then ended her our conversation by saying "this is why we do what what we do. It's all about building relationship in order to share Christ.” – Karen Morrow, CBF Field Personnel, Fort Worth, Texas
My youngest staff, Josephine, finished high school after becoming pregnant and having a baby her junior year. She then started volunteering at our wound care clinic. She has always been a hard worker but did not initially show the kind of curiosity or critical skills needed for identifying and treating more complex wounds. But now after working for almost 3 years together, my assessment of her skill level has changed. I was assisting her the other day as she worked on patients at our main exam table, where the hardest, most complex wounds are treated. I was amazed at her thoroughness, creativity and problem solving with some of the more complex wounds. She did an amazing job and there was nothing for me to add or suggest. She has risen from being a reliable staff, who did only adequate wound cleaning for basic wounds well, to being one of my best practitioners! -- Karen Alford, CBF Field Personnel, Vogan, Togo
