What's in a meal?

At Meals on Wheels, we believe in nourishing not just the body with our nutritious, senior-friendly meals, but also the mind and soul. We do that by providing a full array of wrap-around services - at no cost - to each of our clients. 

During delivery, Volunteer Matthew helped our client and her pets evacuate from her burning house. While he was there to deliver meals, he noticed the kitchen was on fire and immediately jumped into action. Meals on Wheels then ensured that this client's smoke detectors work properly and made sure she had a few extra meals on hand.

On another delivery, our volunteer called our team when 94-year-old "Walter" didn't answer the door. Once we were able to enter the home, we found that "Walter" had fallen the night before and wasn't able to reach his phone for help. Our team was in communication with his family and emergency services were immediately deployed. After a short stint in the hospital, "Walter" was back on his feet and ready to visit with our volunteers again.

Last year, through the mobile app our volunteers use during deliveries, 1,611 alerts were sent to our team. Our ability to respond quickly to these alerts, to call or visit the client, to link them to resources, and to ensure their safety, can only happen with your help. As our program rapidly grew to serve more clients during the pandemic, so did our need for more assistance with these clients. Choosing to support Meals on Wheels this Giving Tuesday will ensure that each senior is delivered not just a meal and a smile, but full-service care so they can remain safely in their homes, where they want and deserve to be.
