Malcolm L “Buck” Marsh Memorial Fund

in support of Alabama Beta

About the Campaign

The Malcolm L. “Buck” Marsh Memorial Fund is an initiative that has been created to honor Brother Buck Marsh, Bond #884 who died peacefully at age 98, surrounded by his family at home. Buck formed lifelong friendships with his brothers at Phi Delta Theta and he deemed those bonds near as important as those he made with the men of Rifle Company A with whom he fought side-by-side in WWII. Buck served Phi Delta Theta as a House Corporation board member for more than 40 years; 16 years as president. Buck brought his skill set to the House Corporation and worked well with other members who brought theirs. He believed in teamwork, encouraging participation from the actives, and developing leadership from the most qualified members. He used to stress that Chapter elections should be about qualifications, and not about popularity, as Chapter success is directly related to strong leadership.

With this memorial fund initiative, we will be funding two key objectives that were important to Buck throughout his life: ensuring our undergraduate members can grow in their leadership roles and preserving the great history of our chapter and its members.

The first objective will be accomplished through the Buck Marsh Memorial Chapter Leadership Fund.  We will honor Buck's memory by ensuring there are funds available for our members to attend best-in-class leadership and professional development opportunities offered through both Auburn University and Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, specifically the Kleberg Emerging Leadership Institute, Phikeia Educators Conference, and Shaffer Honors College of Leadership.

The Buck Marsh Memorial Chapter Leadership Fund also allows the actives to purchase educational supplies for the house and give small academic awards to reward actives who perform well on campus and in the classroom.

The second objective will be accomplished through the Buck Marsh Digital History Museum. The Museum will enable our Alabama Beta Chapter to honor, archive, and preserve its long and glorious past.  Artifacts, letters, photographs, and other memorabilia, as well as stories and the accomplishments of the brothers who have been a part of this chapter from its founding in 1879, to the present day and the days ahead, will be captured, organized, and made easily searchable and available.

The Buck Marsh Digital History Museum will be an online presentation of our chapter's history dedicated to Buck Marsh. The Museum will include a timeline of chapter events, a video interview with Buck, and stories of other notable brothers and veterans to share their exploits and achievements. Also included will be a collection of photographs to eventually include all the chapter's past, present, and future composites.

What a wonderful way to honor and remember our own member of the greatest generation.  We should not forget those who gave so much for our country, especially those who signed the Bond and passed through our halls.  For generations to come, the young men of Alabama Beta can learn about the chapter and be inspired by dedicated brothers such as Buck Marsh. At the same time, your time on campus as an Alabama Beta brother will also be memorialized and made available for your descendants and others to see.
