More Good is Leaning In to Fill the Gap!

Nik discovered that young adults over 17 are too old to qualify for Make-A-Wish. He knew how important having support programs are to help fight cancer. A wish bring hope, happiness, healing and memories! Nik's last wish was for us to Take 1 Step to help!

Nik found a gap for young adults fighting cancer.

Matthew fighting ALL $6,000

In high school and younger I was a big football and basketball athlete. Basketball is my first love. I had a 3.0 and had a full scholarship to JSU. When I was 17 I was in the hospital when I had to get my armpits cut because I developed Hidradenitis suppurativa and they came in to do a dressing change and I started to bleed out. I saw a white light, but I did not get close to it. I kept dealing with it, the Hidradenitis suppurativa constantly, and after high school I was working 12 hours a day in construction. One day after work I was lying in bed and I felt sick and I went to UAB where they found out I had leukemia. When I first experienced it is was hard to get over, but with the help of my friends and family it wasn’t hard to get over. Now I am continuing treatments and the leukemia is almost gone and I will get a transplant soon.

I was a normal college student and working. Now I’ve taken a step back from school and work and focusing on staying healthy and beating cancer. My life has certainly changed with lots of Dr appointments and chemo with more surgery soon.

Tate fighting Non Hodgkin's Lymphoma $6,000

Before being diagnosed with cancer, I enjoyed spending time with friends and working at Gardendale First Baptist. I started having symptoms a few months before being diagnosed and after several doctor's appointments and ER visits, I spent 26 days in the hospital. I was on high flow oxygen, had a chest tube and had 3 different biopsies. Since my diagnosis was during the COVID pandemic it was hard to be able to go places or see friends. I missed being able to tailgate and go to football games at Auburn. The lymphoma did not fully respond to the initial chemo which was 6 cycles of R- CHOP. So I had to have a stronger chemo and then undergo a Stem Cell Transplant. I was thankful that it was baseball season when I was in the hospital for 2 weeks during my transplant. I was able to watch a lot of games to pass the time.
