NAC Outrigger New Canoe Fundraiser has raised $7,983 out of their goal of $26,000
About the Campaign
This canoe turned into a much larger story to tell.
This is an unlimited canoe with a strong legacy backstory. The paint design on this canoe is a design that Sam Couch had always wanted to have on a Unlimited Canoe - it's a throwback to our original Bradleys, one of the first sets of OC6s at the NAC.
This new canoe will represent the OGs of the NAC, and those who set up this program for success! We have written in the bulk head of this canoe. So no matter where this canoe goes, or even if its repainted, these legends will always be with the canoe.
Jon Van Cleave - Founding Member and Board Member
Sam Couch - NAC youth and adult paddler, Outrigger Coach for decades, and mentor to most of the leaders in today's NAC Program. The Couch family continues to support the NAC and it's outrigger paddlers.
John Rader - NAC Day 1 Supporter and Outrigger Canoe perpetuator
Hal and Kay Rosoff—The Rosoff Family has been a major supporter of NAC since the early days. Hal has been one of the biggest supporters of Outrigger Paddling in Newport Harbor, and we wouldn't have his support without the support of Kay Rosoff, whom we recently lost earlier this year. The Rosoff Family has been a huge support for NAC and all it's programs, and we will continue to keep the legacy of Hal and Kay strong on the washdeck.
Jon Van Cleave was an original founder of the Newport Aquatic Center. His history in Newport Harbor and in ocean watersports runs deep. Just ask anyone who knows the history of NAC - they can't share the story without mentioning JVC.
The Malama received its name from boat designer Will Reichenstein, named after a famous story that involved a canoe named THE MALAMA.
This canoe, owned by Kapena Whitford, was damaged during the women's Na Wahine O Ke Kai race in 1982 by huge surf, 2 weeks before the Molokai Hoe. Bud Hohl stayed behind and repaired it so Blazing Paddles could race it. Jon Van Cleave, along with other legends such as Willie Reichenstein and Billy Whitford, were in that Molokai Hoe Winning crew.
Code of the West
As it turns out, the ‘Code of the West’ strikes a deep cord with people from all walks of life. Since ethics has become a major part of our national conversation as of late, the Code is as important now as ever.
Simple, timeless guiding principles to live by that can be adopted into our own lives. Jon did.
