Please join us for our 3rd Annual 5K for Aidan J. Run/Walk for Heart-Safe Communities! The course is one of Aidan's favorites: the flat and shady Struble Trail in Downingtown, PA. This year's events will be held on Satuday, June 15th, beginning at 8am. Please see below for a more detailed schedule.

This event aims to raise awareness about Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) and ways we can prevent this from happening to another child. Our goal is a two-pronged approach. First, we will continue to sponsor Free Heart Screenings in an effort to catch problems before they happen. Second, we want every school and every ball field to be equipped with AEDs so if an SCA event happens, that child is given every opportunity to survive. Blair Allan, a local 16-year-old student, will be our keynote speaker this year. She is alive today because her school had AEDs. Come listen to her story...

Not a runner? No problem! Come for the 1 Mile Family Walk or bring the children for the Kids Races. Each child who finishes will get a prize!

Race proceeds will go directly to sponsoring free Heart Screenings for kids and teens in our area and purchasing AEDs for local schools and youth organizations. We thank Parent Heart Watch, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, for managing our funds again this year. PHW is the national voice protecting youth from Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) and preventable Sudden Cardiac Death. Parent Heart Watch was incorporated in 2005 and is a 501(c)(3) public charity. PHW’s tax IDnumber is: 11-3761392.

Are you interested in having your children's hearts screened?  Sign up for our next free heart screening event, which will be held on Saturday, June 1st at Downingtown West High School, by visiting https://www.research.chop.edu/programs/healthyheart/register.php.  Children must be between ages 5-19.

This race is for Aidan's spirit, his heart, and his memory - and also for the heart health of all children in our communities.

***A few things to note:

CHIP TIMING AND TECH T's FOR ALL TEEN AND ADULT PARTICIPANTS!  Children will receive cotton T-shirts.  T-shirts are included with your registration if you register before May 24th.

Adult tech T-shirts (all sizes) and Youth Medium cotton T-shirts will be on sale the day of the race.

For you speedy runners (24 minutes or less), select the "Elite Run" option on the registration page.  The Elite Run is held at 9:00am.  The "Regular 5K" will begin at 9:30am.

Any 5K participant (Elite or Regular) may also participate in the 1 Mile Walk and the Kids Races!  When you register, please be sure to select "5K" to ensure you receive a chip bib.

Please note that the start and finish are NOT in the same spot!  The start is on Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the gazebo.  The finish is at the trailhead in Kardon Park (The Ponds) about 1/4 mile east off Pennsylvania Avenue.

(Last year's 5K was a great success!  Help make 5K 2013 an even bigger success so we can continue to keep kids' hearts safe!)

What have we accomplished so far?

1. Sponsored three local cardiac screenings, checking the hearts of 1,000+ children
(Did you know that on average, 1 out of every 100 children had cardiac concerns that warranted further investigation and/or treatment?).

2. Assisted with the purchase and/or installation expenses of 21 AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators) in Downingtown Schools as well as EBYA and GEYA youth athletic leagues.

3. Held two AED training events for more than 65 teachers and coaches.

4. Raised awareness of Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) and the importance of AEDs.

5. NEW!!! We proudly announce that we have formed our own nonprofit organization: AIDAN’S HEART FOUNDATION! Stay tuned for more details.

6. NEW!!! We are in the process of trying to get Aidan’s Law (PA public schools must have a working AED) passed! It is officially a Bill (SB606) and is currently in the PA Senate Education Committee!

We couldn't do this without your support and participation. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you, and hope to see you at this year's5K for Aidan J!

(Thanks to your support, East Brandwine Township is mounting 3 AEDs at the Community Park, which hosts hundreds of youth weekly for athletic practices and events.)

(Also, thanks to your support, we've been able to donate several AEDs to schools and youth athletic organizations and to train teachers and coaches in responding to Sudden Cardiac Arrest.)

(Each September 4th, the anniversary of Aidan's passing, we will continue to place bunches of red balloons at locations in which AEDs are being installed as a result of your efforts.)

Can't Attend the Event? Show your support by making a donation or creating your own personal fundraising page. Your generosity is greatly appreciated and will help to provide education and screenings to prevent Sudden Cardiac Arrest in children!

This picture of Devin, Grandmom, and Aidan was taken six days before Aidan's heart suddenly stopped.  This is not a picture of a sick child.  Had Aidan been checked with an EKG/ECG at his annual pediatric visits, he may still be with us today.  Please get your children's hearts checked.

See?  An ECG is so quick and painless that even a toddler doesn't mind it!  (Especially when he has a bag of Doritos to distract him!)  This is Quentin, age 2, getting his heart checked.
