HUDSON VALLEY HONOREE: SHEILA DURKIN
Sheila is a proud traumatic brain injury (TBI) survivor whose determination and resilience have shaped her remarkable journey. After being hit by a car while riding her bike at just eight years old, Sheila worked tirelessly to regain her ability to walk and talk. Her strength and perseverance, supported by the unwavering love of her parents and the many people who have stood by her, have brought her to where she is today.
Sheila now lives independently in her own apartment, thanks in part to the incredible support of her team at Advocate. She continues to grow in confidence and independence, embracing life with remarkable self-esteem and courage.
Active and adventurous, Sheila can often be found swimming laps, walking, hiking, traveling, or dancing to her favorite music. She was once an avid snowshoer and still finds joy in trying new things.
Generous and thoughtful, Sheila is always ready to lend a hand. Her kindness and loyalty have helped her build deep, lasting relationships. She spent many years working at daycare centers, where she was beloved by the children, and now brings that same warmth and care to her role as a loving aunt and great-aunt.
And when it comes to chocolate chip cookies, Sheila is a legend. Hers are the best and it’s nearly impossible to stop at just one! Sheila’s strength, heart, and unstoppable spirit make her truly one of a kind.
The Brain Injury Association of New York State is proud to recognize Sheila as the 2025 March On for Brain Injury Hudson Valley Honoree, celebrating her kindness, spirit, warmth, and remarkable courage.
