Artist in Residence Open Studios: Anjali Kamat & Rehan Ansari
About the Event
We invite you to join us for a night of reflection with Anjali Kamat & Rehan Ansari. Breaking the Silence is a storytelling and oral history project within the South Asian-American community in Queens, New York. This project offers workshops for South Asian-American youth to develop a multimedia storytelling project about the legacies of ethnocentrism as well as stories of resistance within their family histories.
Anjali Kamat is an award-winning filmmaker, writer, and journalist in Queens, New York. She recently finished her first feature documentary with Rehan Ansari on the erosion of democracy in India and her family’s ties to the far-right Hindu nationalists ruling the country. She’s been the Belle Zeller Visiting Professor at Brooklyn College, a Bard at Brooklyn Public Library fellows, and is a Type Media Center fellow.
Rehan Ansari is an NYC-based writer, filmmaker, playwright and journalist. He is co-directing The Return, a non-fiction feature. His play, Unburdened, was staged in New York and Prague. He was a regular columnist at Mid-Day Mumbai and has written for publications in India, Pakistan, Canada, the UK, and the US, about art, politics, borders, civil rights, and historical trauma.

About Create Change Residency
The Create Change Residency program supports the development of participatory and community-attuned creative projects by artists of color. Projects may take place anywhere in NYC, across various community sites, from laundromats and urban gardens to playgrounds and community centers.
