The U.S. hasn't always held primaries. In fact, the first weren't held until 1912, and we still have some states that don't offer primaries to their voters as a way to have a say in which candidates get on their party's ticket.
What many of us don't realize about primaries is that in many states, voters decide on more than just their presidential candidate.
