FIRST FRIDAYS!
Liberation Series:
A Legacy of Seeds
About the Event
Join us as we delve into the art of Resilience. In spaces of uncertainty and turmoil, learn and discuss how spirituals and quiltmaking art practices guide, strengthen and sustained our ancestors. Can we embed messages in our art to sustain us and generations to come? Join artist and activist, Wéma Ragophala, vibe with Dr. Drew, live music with singers Nia and Monica Soyemi, speak with author Verda H.Olayinka, and author and quilt artist, Dr. Myrah Brown Green, as we think about resilience and activate new spaces for Black Liberation.

This fall season, The Laundromat Project is reintroducing “The Liberation Series” as a set of public programs that aim to transform The LP’s storefront into a vibrant hub for community building between local artists, cultural producers, entrepreneurs, organizers, and neighbors in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. Our programs seek to unite, network, and build economic empowerment, while exploring innovative ways we can honor cultural legacies and move towards liberation by connecting with one another through artmaking and community dialogue.
Held on the First Friday of each month, The Liberation Series will be hosted in partnership with Wema Ragophala, an LP artist, who will facilitate a community social and deep conversations between artists and Pan-African cultural experts as they relate to contemporary social issues experienced by our immediate community. Attendees will be encouraged to contribute to ongoing dialogues about community needs to highlight diverse viewpoints and motivate participants to take direct action through grassroots advocacy.
“We are the seeds of our ancestors’ wildest dreams! Join us for this series of programming to cultivate conversations, engage in intersectional arts making praxis, and think about our place in community as a seed. Where we are in our growth? Whether our roots are deeply embedded in the history and culture of BedStuy, or if we are newly germinated seedlings looking to grow and connect within community, we are creating pathways for radical movements in afro-futurism.”
- Wema Ragophala
Light refreshments and finger foods will be served alongside live music from local musicians/DJs.
