The Humboldt Bay Critter Crawl is a non-competitive open water swim benefiting the North Coast Marine Mammal Center in Crescent City.

The event consists of 2 current assisted swims beginning near the opening to Humboldt Bay. The short course, 0.7 mile swim ends at the county campground. The long course, 4.5 mile swim continues along the Eureka city front to the Woodley Island Marina.

The North Coast Marine Mammal Center is a private non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of marine mammals along the northern most coast of California. Each year the NMMC responds to hundreds of calls about distressed marine mammals, transporting malnourished, sick and injured animals to their volunteer run facility in Crescent City. The cost of feeding seals and sea lions ranges from $7-15 per animal, per day, in addition to housing, medical care, and transport, among other expenses.

The fourth annual Critter Crawl will be held on Sunday, July 23rd, 2017.

If you would like to participate in this event as a swimmer, please note that advance registration is required. Water temperatures in Humboldt Bay are likely to range from 55°F to 65°F over the course of the swim, but may be as low as 50°F at the swim start. Cold water acclimation prior to the swim is mandatory. In order to keep swimmers safe, each swimmer will be escorted by a kayak throughout the duration of the swim. Motorized boats will also be present to monitor vessel traffic in the bay and render assistance to any swimmers in need.

Because this is a fundraiser, we are requesting that all swimmers make a minimum donation of $50 at the time of registration. Of course larger donations are welcome and much appreciated.

If this amount is a burden, condsider inviting friends, family members, and coworkers to share in the fun of this unique event and support your swim.

While the swim itself is not a race, we encourage all those with a competitive streak to become one of our top fundraisers.
