3/1/2018 UPDATE:

Thank you to everyone who donated towards my TNT Pay It Forward campaign! Because of your generosity, we raised just over $1000 to send another cancer survivor on trip into the wilderness! Let's see what else we can do!

On May 5th I will be participating in the intense Spartan Beast Race with True North Treks. "With 12+ miles and 30+ obstacles between you and the finish line, the Spartan Beast will test everything you’re made of: your strength, your endurance, your resolve." I'll be joining a team of bad ass Beasts who are all raising money for the cause as we go through the race and test our limits together.

Honestly, I think I might be insane. I am exhausted and out of shape. But because I never seem to do anything small, I'm going to add fuel to the fire (the fire that I will inevitably by jumping over come race day). If I am able to raise $1500 (for a TNT total of $2500), I will face another fear and jump out of a plane!

Please help me send another cancer survivor on a trek of a lifetime!

I know first hand the toll cancer takes on your life, your relationships, and your sanity.

At 28 years old I was diagnosed with Hodgkins lymphoma. Shortly after going into remission, I relapsed. I spent the next several years battling the fear and anxiety of the cancer returning as well as secondary health issues that came after my treatment.

And then a year ago, my husband Brad was diagnosed with stage 4 renal cell carcinoma - a rare and aggressive cancer, especially for someone in their 30s. 101 days later, he passed away.

Cancer has been an unfortunate part of my story since my first diagnosis in 2011. I have been both the patient and the caregiver. I have personally seen and felt the toll this disease can take. Getting cancer is exhausting. Physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually. It’s all exhausting.

After losing Brad, I started to spend more time outside, realizing the healing power of nature. Alone, I started hiking through national parks and climbing up mountains and sitting by lakes, taking notice that those moments were my best moments. And during one of the lowest points of my journey - when I was lost and confused and the effects of cancer were getting the best of me - in an act of kindness from the universe, I was introduced to True North Treks (TNT).

TNT, through week-long treks, helps survivors connect with nature, connect with others who have lived through similar experiences, and connect with themselves. Recently I returned from my own life altering trek - a week of canoeing and camping in the backcountry of Utah. To be able to completely disconnect from my life back home - from my phone, from the internet, from all of life’s stressors - and connect with something bigger, was an experience I can’t adequately describe. For the first time since I lost Brad, I felt calm. I felt present. Personally, I knew the healing power of getting outside and connecting with nature. But what I didn’t expect was how impactful connecting with others would be. To sit under the stars and share our stories - and to feel understood - is an experience I hope every survivor is able to have.

So now I’d like to help provide that opportunity for someone else. I was able to experience a week of peace - and learn mindfulness tools that will stick with me indefinitely - because of a past participant’s generosity and fundraising efforts. And now it’s my turn to pay it forward.

Cancer has stolen more than I’d like to admit. And I know what it’s like to fight for your life. To fight for your future. Please join me in giving someone else an experience that allows them to stop fighting. That gives them the hope to keep living.

My original fundraising goal was $1200 - that’s what it takes to cover all the costs for one survivor  to go on a trek- but I’d love to raise my personal goal to $2500. TNT also runs a survivor/caregiver trek and having been both the survivor and the caregiver, I know how powerful and beneficial this type of experience - this type of healing - can be for both involved. And to be able to be share that type of significant journey with a loved one is something I wish I had been able to do. So let’s help change the life of not one, but two people! Any additional money raised will give more survivors the opportunity to connect in a life altering way.

Cancer effects us all. Let's help positively effect someone else.
