Why I'm Riding

This weekend I riding 286 miles in 3 days through Oklahoma -- Here is why. Justin and Kristin Akin are dear friends of mine.  They are talented and heroic people – I am lucky to know them.  Justin and I met in the summer of 1988 at The University of Texas.  He quickly became one of my closest friends.  He was in my wedding and I was in his.  He knew my children and I knew his.  Life seemed to be moving along like we thought it should be.  Then two months after the Akin’s 2nd son (Andrew) was born everything changed.  Andrew got very sick very fast.

Andrew Akin died on Sept 5th 2009 at only 27 months old (that date was also my 40th B-Day).  His older brother, Matthew Akin, died 8 months later.  After 4 bone marrow transplants between them, they both died fighting a lesser-known but ridiculously devastating disease – HLH (Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis) to learn more go to http://www.matthewandandrew.org/what-is-hlh.html.  Matthew and Andrew were amazing children. I am privileged to say I knew them.  No person and especially no child should have to go through what these boys went through.  Please read Kristin Akin’s book “Love Trumps Grief:  The fight to save our sons and the gift that saved us” to understand the monumental battles this family fought and others are fighting.

I am riding with Justin to honor Matthew and Andrew, to support my friends Justin and Kristin, to support other families that have or are fighting this disease, and to raise money for HLH awareness.

I would like to thank my family for supporting me while I tried to be some form of help to the Akins during their times of need and during this ride.  I love and appreciate Laura, Patrick Jr., Alyssa, and Sofia now more than ever thanks to Matthew and Andrew.  The Akin’s story has provided me perspective that I carry every day.  Matthew and Andrew live through all of us that have been touched by the events of their lives – don’t be scared to jump in, learn about HLH, and get involved.  Those boys sure were brave.  Please - Please support me to help bring awareness to HLH and create something positive from the terrible tragedy of Matthew’s and Andrew’s deaths.
