The 7th November was the WORDATHON!

I wrote from 'dawn to dawn,' starting at 5am UK time Saturday 7th November, and continuing until 4:35am on the 8th. I wrote 50,010 words!

I am still busy writing - I am aiming for about 12,000 words a day during this last week in order to finish the whole first draft of my novel. I will find time round the edges to keep you updated, and there will be a video of the Wordathon highlights soon!

In the meantime, you can still read along with the draft as I write: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1-Cn5w581_IUrDfw4U2atdIrZwA3dFRz5lsxlEugZrn0/pub (updated manually each day, so keep checking in for the next instalment!)

THE WHO

I am Sally, an aspiring author who has never yet finished a full-length, proper novel draft. I am determined to change that fact and really see a story through to 'The End'. And if you've ever wondered how a writer writes a book, I will be sharing the process behind it all through complete creative transparency - even down to making my first draft available online to read as I write it.

THE WHAT

So what exactly am I doing? I call it the 'Newbie to Novelist' challenge, and there are two main parts:

  • Write 50,000 words in a DAY (the 7th November). That's over 2,000 words an hour, for 24 hours.
  • Finish my whole first draft (maybe 100,000 words or more) during November.

THE WHY

I’m currently participating in (and raising money for) National Novel Writing Month.

During November, hundreds of thousands of people attempt to write 50,000 words during November. Throughout the year, NaNoWriMo continues to welcome nearly 500,000 writers (like me!) to start creative projects. They value:

  • Diversity. They support writers of all ages and backgrounds, from over 200 countries around the world.

  • Empowerment. Their projects help people learn what they can accomplish when they’re determined.

  • Community. They encourage participants to form and sustain creative communities, both on- and off-line.

‚ÄčThis organisation helps spread the power of story and gets many people writing who would otherwise never know what their imaginations can do. Please support both me and them in this epic undertaking by donating a few dollars (they cost less than pounds!).

My aim is to raise $1,667 for NaNoWriMo. 1,667 is a special number because it is the daily wordcount goal that all 'WriMos' have to achieve in order to reach 50,000 words in 30 days.

THE WHERE

You can follow me in various places around the internet. Please do take a look - any view or comment gives me vital encouragement in this ambitious (some might say ludicrous) trial of words.
