I once lay down sick in bed and thought... “One day, my heart will probably get tired and stop beating...but when it does, Lord, may I be asleep and not feel anything while you take me home?”

My name is Sheena Basemera and this is my life’s journey....

I was 13 years old when doctors discovered I had a heart defect. My biggest fear was that it was never going to be fixed. But one day while waiting for medical attention in Mulago Hospital, I remember meeting Mrs Shemsande Doreka. She introduced herself as staff with the Children’s Heart Project at Samaritan’s Purse International Relief Organization. I remember her smiling and telling me that I was going to be helped and my heart would be fixed. I didn’t understand how, but I felt really lucky and wondered what it would be like to be normal again. Travelling to America was exciting but mostly worrying. I didn’t know what the outcome was going to be. Would I come back home alive? Would I get healed? Would it all be ok? All these questions ran through my mind. And when I got there, somehow my spirit was strong, my heart was lighter, I was happier and at peace. I am sure it was because during that time, I felt loved and special. Everyone cared for me, right from the doctors, the host family and the church we went to. It is at that moment that I got to know that actually there are people with beautiful hearts and you don’t have to pay for their love in return. Many times I wondered why they behaved the way they did, I asked Charlotte our interpreter, and she said it’s because Jesus loves them and wants them to share that same love with everyone. I remember thinking; I want to be like them. I wanted to learn how to love that way too. No one here at home told me about Jesus and yet I was so interested after thinking that is the healer. I loved going to church in America, it was good to learn more about the Bible and Jesus Christ. Anyhow, I was back home shortly after that.

Salvation is also not an easy journey, but it is worth it! And I speak proudly about it because I am not on this journey alone, Jesus is with me, He has been with me all this while. I just didn’t know it. I know what it feels like to feel hopeless and scared; I also know that it only takes Jesus to turn things around. I have learnt that we were all created for a purpose. Finding ones purpose for life and doing it is actual living. I also learnt that it’s not always about me but rather it’s about my brother, sister, friend, parent and others. It’s about the love of Jesus that I need to share.

The goodness and love of Jesus and all His beautiful work still being done through all the Children’s Heart Project beneficiaries and their families is beautiful! It’s Jesus Christ working through and with the whole team! Blessed are the hands that have given to the work of God and making known of the love Jesus Christ has for us all as He touches one heart at a time. May His Name be praised!

I am asking you to partner with me and Children's Heart Project to raise funds to bring one child life saving surgery. Together we can help a child receive physical healing while God works to bring spiritual healing.
