When I was a young child, my mom started dating this man, named Don. He refused to meet her kids (me & my brother) for the first year they were together as he didn't want to get too attached if things didn't work out between my mom and him.

Fast forward to when I was 19 - finding out this man, that raised me as his own, was diagnosed with Cancer. Over the next 5 years he was in remission and then diagnosed again, in remission and then diagnosed again, in remission and then diagnosed one final time. In May of 2012 he lost his battle with Cancer.

My parents lived on a boat and I remember receiving a call from a family friend, that I needed to get to the boat and immediately. I lived a mile away and was down there in a matter of minutes. My brother was working at the time and getting ahold of him and to meet us was a little more difficult. I remember watching this frail version of the man I knew struggle to breath. It was just my mom and myself on the boat at this time. My brother arrived and once he was there and we were all together as a family, we watched him take his final breath. It happened so quickly.

I cannot even begin to describe what it feels like to watch someone you looked up to, someone you loved with every ounce of your being, some one so strong look so weak and take their final breath. It has been a very hard thing to cope with and doing it alone is simply not an option.  I seeked help when I needed, when many are afraid to reach out and talk to someone. That's why I am choosing to paddle 21 miles to support the Flatwater Foundation.

Help me support The Flatwater Foundation by making a donation. Your donation will provide access to mental health care for individuals and families touched by a cancer diagnosis that would otherwise not be able to get the care they need. I am working to raise at least $2,000 to embark on this 21-mile journey to take a stand; won't you please consider sponsoring one of my 21 miles with a donation? This will ensure we meet our goal, and will help so many in need.

The process is fast, easy, and secure. I truly appreciate any support you can provide, and we hope you can celebrate with us all on June 12, at the LCRA Lawn at Tom Miller Dam (adjacent to Hula Hut). Learn more at tylersdtc.com

If you can’t make a donation at this point, help me reach my goal by sharing this page on Facebook and Twitter. Or, even better, send an e-mail to friends you think might be interested in contributing and include a link to my page!

Thanks so much for your generosity!
