I have long yearned to learn about and better understand what it means to live as a follower of Christ. As I reflect on my time at Westmont College, I realize this sort of learning and understanding cannot be solely intellectual, but must also be experiential and physical. It is for this reason that I believe Rostro de Cristo ('Face of Christ' in Spanish) is a natural step for me in my mission to learn more about the love of Christ because this program allows for a unique manifestation of Christ’s love in the world. I am inspired by its emphasis on mutuality, solidarity, and simplicity. The ability to grow in community with fellow volunteers simultaneously makes room for effective spiritual discernment and creates a beautiful opportunity for young people to come together with those of another culture. The cross-cultural aspect of the placement will prove vitally important in my own efforts to teach others about the importance of recognizing the value and worth of those often perceived as different or unworthy of our love and respect. 

 Rostro de Cristo—a small Christian non-profit located on the outskirts of Guayaquil, Ecuador—works on long-term solutions to the problem of poverty and seeks to improve the lives of all those it touches. Its mission is to enter into relationships with the Ecuadorian people with respect and humility, serve local projects that respond to the problems of poverty experienced by so many, and create an intentional community of volunteers who share faith, food, and friendship. After a period of orientation and training, I will be placed in a community development program in Ecuador. Some examples of sites that I may be placed in include an orphanage, a school, a domestic abuse center, or a leprosy clinic.
