Whether it's the pleasure of reading the newspaper with a cup of coffee every morning or curling up with a favorite novel on the weekend, chances are, reading has enriched your life.

According to The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), only 26% of students in New York City performed at or above a reading proficiency level in 2015.

Behind the Book's mission is to inspire New York City public school students to love reading by bringing accomplished authors and their books into classrooms and creating rich, innovative literacy programs.  In a series of workshops, authors discuss their books and teach a genre of writing, encouraging students to see themselves as readers and writers and ultimately guiding them in the creation and publication of their own original writing.  Our programs nurture creative thinking, self-confidence, and the belief that each person’s ideas have value and should be heard.

Independent evaluations confirm that Behind the Book programs increase student motivation to read and write[1], improve content learning[2] and increase literacy skills[3]. One Behind the Book student said of the impact of the program:

I've been inspired to learn more, read more and write more. One day I even plan to write a book of my own.

Since our founding in 2003, we have served more than 12,500 students but there are still 15 NYC public schools on Behind the Book's waiting list. With your support, we can meet this demand and continue to impact more than 1,700 students in the 2016-2017 school year. Join us in taking students 'behind the book.'  Together we can create readers for life!
