Hi Friends and Family!

As you know, our son Noah is legally blind and will be totally blind as an adult. This is why we place such a big emphasis on making sure Noah learns Braille, practices Braille, and reads Braille as much as possible.

The National Braille Press has been helping us do just that since we first learned Noah is going blind 5 and a half years ago. Every month they send Noah a fun kids book in Braille at no cost to us. While Noah’s fortunate to come from a family that can afford to buy additional Braille books, most kids who are visually impaired aren’t. Braille books are hard to find, take a long time to emboss and ship, and are much more expensive than the print books that sighted kids can read. There is also a very limited selection of children’s titles available at local or state libraries for blind kids to borrow (our local library system only has ONE kid’s Braille book, and Noah’s already read it). Because of these factors, in the US only 10% of blind children are taught how to read Braille. This is probably one of the main reasons that 85% of blind adult Americans are unemployed.
