AmazonSmile May Already Be Fundraising For You!
According to a November 2013 Gallup poll, Americans are expecting to spend an average of $704 on gifts this holiday season. If your supporters make their purchases through AmazonSmile, your nonprofit organization can get a small percentage of that holiday spending – and the best part is there is no cost to the customer or the organization.
What is AmazonSmile?
The AmazonSmile Foundation is operated by Amazon.com, the largest online retailer in the world. When customers go to smile.amazon.com they can purchase tens of millions of products through their existing Amazon account. The AmazonSmile Foundation then donates 0.5% of the purchase price (not including service fees or shipping & handling) to the customer’s chosen 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Donations are made directly to the organization’s bank accounts each quarter.
When customers first enter smile.amazon.com, they are immediately prompted to choose from nearly one million eligible organizations. Customers can even designate their donations to charities that have not yet registered with AmazonSmile. Once the organization does register, it is eligible for accrued donations from the past four quarters. While 0.5% may not seem like much, the program won’t cost you anything except the few minutes it takes to register. Why not claim whatever cash might already be accruing?
How Do I Register?
Registering a nonprofit with AmazonSmile is simple. An official representative must create an administrator account, submit an email address, and agree to the participation terms. After that, send Amazon your organization’s bank account information so they can deposit your donations. Account verification can take up to 5 business days.
Spread the Word!
Because AmazonSmile donations are derived from a percentage of customer purchases, the more supporters buy, the more funds you receive. And with more than half of Americans doing their Christmas shopping online , your supporters are probably already making online purchases.
AmazonSmile does, however, have some restrictions for program promotion. Organizations may not advertise AmazonSmile through email or offline communications like newsletters, but you can use links, widgets, social media, and website banners (which you can download from AmazonSmile). By combining Twitter, Facebook, and website CTAs, you can easily inform your community without email campaigns.
By spending a few minutes registering and promoting AmazonSmile, your organization can benefit not only from the holiday shopping season, but from online shopping year-round.
